Basketball is one of the best team sports for cardiovascular exercise. The nature of the game is such that you will be sprinting back and forth for long periods of time and generating quite a sweat. Pick up groups are often just a couple of guys out playing basketball on nearby courts looking to have a good time. If you’re interested in getting involved in a pickup group just put one of your basketball jerseys on and get out on the court during prime time, generally between 5p.m and 9p.m. Just show up and ask to be put into the game. If the players are nice they should let you jump right in.
The more you show your face around the basketball court the more you will be invited to play. If you are looking for a little bit more serious competition, or if you don’t like the attitudes of the guys who play pick up, you can always join a rec-league. If you don’t like playing outdoors there are plenty of opportunities to play with indoor basketball hoops too. Most community centers will have postings for recreational teams looking for players and you can use internet resources like Sportsvite and Meetup to find members also. If you can manage at least an hour of game time each day you will find yourself healthier than ever.
