Exercises for Lower Back Pain

As many people get older, the body breaks down and they experience back pain.  Perhaps it is due to an accumulation of years from manual labor, an accident, or a musculoskeletal predisposition, the fact is a lot of people need back pain relief.   If you are suffering from back discomfort, here are a few options available to you.

The common notion is that if you have back pain, you should take it easy on yourself and not move to aggravate the back further.  Unless told by your doctor differently, you can actually benefit from some low impact exercise which can help relieve some of the pain and stiffness.  This is because exercises conducted in a controlled manner can encourage the flow of nutrients between the cracks of disc space to muscles and joints.  This can result in the back being looser and less likely to stiffen up when on a regular exercise program.

Exercises which would be appropriate for someone suffering from back pain include some exercises done on the back.  While on your back, you can do some leg raises, knee to chest stretches and hamstring stretches.

The use of medicine balls is also very popular with people who want to strengthen their backs.  You can sit on the ball and do some stationary marching exercises by lifting opposing arms and legs up and down.  Another good exercise to do with the medicine ball is to lie on top of it, and do the opposing arm and leg lift as well.

Every person is different and while these exercise tips help to strengthen the core stomach and back muscles for most individuals, you should consult with your doctor before starting an exercise program.  Some doctors might even recommend their male patients were mens girdles to help support their backs.   Medical support girdles are quite common so do investigate if you need one prior to exercising.
